This week, our midtown Mount Hope neighbourhood played host to the REEP Green Solutions Prize Party for their Rain Ready Neighbourhoods project. You can read more about the REEP Green project here and a great example of rain ready neighbourhoods from Seattle.

They got to the prize announcements right away….
The winners in Mount Hope are:
- Alexis Motuz – 1st Grand Prize of $10,000 towards a front yard makeover + more
- Steven Reesor Rempel – $1,500 towards a rain ready front yard project + more
- Runners-Up – RAIN Coach Consultation valued at $300
Kyle Chambers, Ramsey Hazineh, Ted and Tracy Martin, Gary McMullin, Wayne Miedema, Carmen McQuillin, Steve Rozon, Connie Thompson

After the official events, we hosted a short walking tour to visit the front yards of the two grand prize winners in order to see their “before” state! We also visited the intersection of Dekay St & Shanley to see where stormwater run off from three downhill streets converges in a low area and causes no end of problems for the basements of homeowners at this intersection. The Rain Ready Neighbourhoods project hopes to address these kinds of issues by collecting more water in yards and diverting it before it gets to the streets.

Once the winners have developed a plan of action with the new RAIN Coach from REEP Green Solutions, there will be work parties so that you can learn from their front yard projects. Please watch for your invitation to participate this fall.
